Description
Positron computed tomography (PCT) scans of the brain, comparing 3 levels of visual stimulation. PCT scans depend on the brain's use of glucose to fuel its activity. A volunteer is injected with a minute dose of a radioactive chemical that binds to glucose molecules in the blood. The glucose tends to concentrate in parts of the brain where there is increased activity (cerebral metabolism), & is detected by its emission of radioactivity (in the form of subatomic particles called positrons). The resulting signals are processed by computer to give maps showing which parts of the brain (arrow- ed) respond to different stimuli.
